TJ also recommends Zerowater.com - water filters. These are the best water filters we have found. Do not trust your city water supply. (TJ is not compensated for our recommendations.)

Here's the Solar Example, since the guest did not want to provide one.

Home Depot - $1500, which is more than double the cost of the system we recommend.

The goal is to get 2200 watts for 2 weeks straight, and spend the least money.

/

1. 100 Amp*Hour battery

2. 2880 running watts

3. Battery time at 2200 watts = about 3 - 4 hours. After that, battery is dead. The solar panels only produce 200 watts, even on a sunny day. You cannot get 2200 watts after 4 hours.

/

TJ DOES NOT recommend a solar system, unless you want to spend 4 - 10 times as much money.

This Home Depot system will run for 15 days straight, rain or snow,

in Seattle, Detroit, Chicago, New York, or Philly.

Westinghouse i2800 $499.00

6 - 5 gallon gas tanks $150.00

30 gallons of fuel $ 75.00

2 extension cords $ 20.00

Total $744.00

/

Buy a cheaper generator, it will save you $100, and provide more power.

Westinghouse WGen3600 $399

/

There is no solar system at this price, that will provide 2200 watts, rain or snow,

in these cities. You will likely pay more than double for a solar system at 2200 continuous watts.

TJ is not compensated for this recommendation.

/

P.S. - You can buy a 55 gallon metal drum for $109 at Home Depot. That will give you 27 days of run time. During rain or snow, a solar panel produces no significant output. Then, you are running on the battery until it dies.

The problem with gas powered generators is that when the electricity is off, the pumps at the gas station will also be off. As someone who has lived on solar power for nearly 40 years, I recommend going with a solar powered battery system. Self contained, compact units the size of small gas powered generators are available.

If you live in Phoenix - we agree.

If you live in Seattle, Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, etc. - No. Sun exposure is too limited.

That's a common fallacy. Modern panels can make power on cloudy days. The solar system on my well (no batteries, big storage tank) will pump water when it's overcast. Granted, not as much, but enough to be helpful. Most batteries will typically carry one through cloudy periods.

Germany, one of the cloudiest countries on earth, has one of the highest rates of solar deployment.

I know some folks on rainy Vancouver Island that live on solar power and use the compact systems (they come with batteries) I referred to when away from the house.

So each should do their own research. 2200 watts minimum for 2 weeks. See how many solar systems can do that... You are going to spend twice as much money.

Kyle Young's avatar

Yes, for twice as much money you get an incalculable amount more reliability when there is no gas at the pumps.

There are these "magical" containers called gas cans. You can buy a 5 gallon gas can at HomeDepot.com for $25.

The iGen2800c can operate for 10 - 12 hours with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.08 GPH), with its fuel capacity of 1 gallon.

That means a 5 gallon plastic gas can, provides 2.5 days of power.

Do the math. If you want more run time - buy more gas cans.

You are not being honest.

Please be specific - what advertised solar system do you recommend that will provide continuous power of 2200 watts, for 2 weeks, even with rain or snow in Seattle or Detroit.

Prove it.

I wish we could get the matrix to show itself so the news would announce it! It sucks knowing that for the most part lies are what's making policy and not Truth.

I see now FOX protecting Zuckenburg and all the tech giants just because Zuckenburg claimed Biden was yelling at them to censor people. Plus then I guess Biden warned of a Tech industrial complex LoL yeah it's the deep state you stupid FOX announcers a holes. They admit a deep state then when Zuckenburg began making what I think are manipulative claims since I think they censored on their own even if Biden did tell them do they did it and liked it... All the big tech platforms do YouTube, Google etc...

I got suspended on YouTube basically for nothing since when I changed the title they accepted my v2k video but they'd dinged it saying the content violated there rules BS if it did then why if all I had to do was change the title and it got through their crap???

anyway yes there is a Oligarch in charge FOX knows or should know it is... But their like even defending Pelosi OMFG the worst God damn person I've ever seen in Office, the dumbest box of rocks and they're defending her OMFG...

Yeah I just got one not like the on pictured, but one I am paying off on through Montgomery Ward Catalogue. its in our shed atm I need to when it's better out take it out and read the Manuel better and get the gas and oil for it that I will need and try it out...

I watched them grill Hegseth yesterday what a crock the Dems just grilling him like he was a bag of shit... But then again we Grilled Wraye but he's treasonous so... but yeah I don't doubt China is in on something and Russia soon. I think it's plausible that they could be invading our Grid and electricity systems??? I expect a war with us and soon no matter that Trump don't want to prophecy will be fulfilled no matter what...

Because I've been living with a roof mounted, stand alone solar power system for so long, I've never had need for any kind of generator, gas or solar. So I'm not here to recommend or promote any solar generator brands. And I'm not here to do research for you. If you do a search for portable solar powered generators you'll find a lot of different kinds, sizes and prices. Some systems come with their own panels, some don't. All of them will still be running after all of your cans of pricey gas are long gone.

You clearly did not accept the challenge to provide a specific system and a specific cost. There are lots of solar systems on HomeDepot.com - you just didn't want to mention those?

/

Here is my opinion of your statement:

"I don't want to show you the numbers, because it becomes obvious that a $1500 solar system will not give you enough power (minimum 2200 watts) to do much of anything, after 2 days of rain or snow in a northern city." You will be screwed.
